Freedom to Drive MN Coalition Celebrate Passing of Driver’s Licenses for All Legislation in House Committee

Coalition packed three hearing rooms of supporters, with all testifiers in favor of bill

ST. PAUL – Feb. 28, 2019 – Freedom to Drive MN, a coalition of 30 Minnesota organizations in support of restoring access to driver’s licenses to undocumented people, released the following statement after the passing of the bill HF1500 in its first hearing in the House of Representatives this evening:

“Black, white or Brown, rural or city, newcomer or long-time resident, every Minnesotan deserves the ability to connect to family, work, school and community. Most Minnesotans believe that strong, caring communities, licensed drivers and working families help create the state we all need to thrive. Years ago, driver’s licenses were taken from some of our families by a few politicians who used fear and division to divide us.

But today, legislators, law enforcement, faith leaders, community activists and supporters on both sides of the political aisle declared that this is the year to restore driver’s licenses for all! It’s time to honor the dignity of every family. Hundreds of people came out from across the state in support of this important legislation. They were not disappointed as the House Committee on Transportation Policy and Finance voted in favor of passing this bill. Minnesotans were loud and clear tonight. We are ready to do the right thing.”

Freedom to Drive MN is a statewide coalition of non-profit organizations, unions, immigrants’ rights advocates, community-based groups and collectives, faith-based organizations, workers’ rights advocates and businesses led by the Multiracial Coalition on Immigration.

The Freedom to Drive MN campaign is committed to passing a state law allowing all Minnesotans, regardless of immigration status, to obtain a driver’s license.

The United State of America presupposes the value of freedom and opportunity. By allowing ALL Minnesotans to have access to driver’s licenses, Minnesota moves toward making these promises a reality.
