DFL lawmakers say undocumented immigrants should have access to driver's licenses

House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler, DFL-Golden Valley, introduced a bill Thursday that would give undocumented immigrants access to Minnesota driver's licenses. More than 100 community members from various advocacy organizations filled the steps of the state Capitol to join Winkler and other lawmakers to show support for the bill.

Push resumes to grant Minnesota driver's licenses to immigrants in U.S.

There have been failed attempts in past to undo the restriction, but lawmakers and advocates who gathered at the State Capitol said this year it will get done.

Hundreds Gather At Capitol To Support Driver’s Licenses For All

Several hundred people were at the Minnesota State Capitol Thursday to urge lawmakers to pass a bill that would provide driver’s licenses to undocumented workers.

Twelve states and the District of Columbia currently allow undocumented workers to get a driver’s license.

 

'Driver's Licenses for All' campaign launched at the capitol

Democratic lawmakers launched a push to reinstate the driver's licenses available to everybody in Minnesota, regardless of their immigration status.

 

Freedom to Drive MN Launches 2019 Driver’s Licenses for All Campaign

On February 21,  at the Capitol, the Freedom to Drive MN coalition launched a campaign for passage of legislation to authorize driver’s licenses for all Minnesotans, regardless of immigration status. House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler, chief sponsor of the bill, spoke at the rally, as did Representatives Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) and Aisha Gomez (D-Minneapolis), who are two of 30 co-sponsors of the bill.
